How to Use AI to Plan Your Japan Trip 2026 (with prompts & tips)

In the past two years, more and more people have started using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to plan their trips. AI tools are great at compiling information from huge databases and giving you quick summaries. At first glance, it looks fast and super easy to use.

However, many people are now realizing that AI isn’t always accurate — hallucinations happen quite often. And even when it gives you a nice summary, you can end up feeling even more overwhelmed. This is because AI throws too much information at once, with too many options and generic suggestions, without understanding your budget, preferences, or who you’re travelling with.

Don’t worry! The Tabigo Japan team is here to share some useful tips on how to use AI wisely to plan your trip. 😉

Prompt is the key!

Prompt means the instruction you give to AI. To use AI efficiently and get accurate results, you need to provide enough information about yourself and be as specific as possible with your requests. If you have time, we recommend “training” the AI first by giving it more details and your personal preferences.

Key information to provide:

  1. Number of pax (couple/friend/family)
  2. Number of days (specific travel dates)
  3. Where to travel (Be specific - prefecture or city)
  4. Budget style (be specific with the amount - RMXXX per person)
  5. Travel style (family-friendly/halal-friendly/solo-style)

Sample prompt:

"Take on the role of a professional travel agent. I am travelling to Japan with my family of 6 (me and my wife, 2 elderly in their 60s who are mobile, and 2 young kids aged 3 and 6). We will be visiting the Tokyo and Osaka areas from May 12th to May 24th 2026. Our budget is mid-range, around RM3,000 per person (excluding flights and accommodation). Please create a 13-day family-friendly itinerary with halal-friendly food options and transportation recommendations."

*These can be replaced.

What AI Cannot Do

Most AI tools like ChatGPT or Gemini still cannot address flight bookings or car rentals at all. They can only provide general information and suggestions, so you’ll still need to do your own research and booking for these.

Additionally, most AI tools cannot automatically detect local holidays, which can significantly affect prices, crowd levels, and operating hours of attractions.

Best Travel AI Tools We’ve Tested

After our team compared several free AI tools, we highly recommend Mindtrip as the top choice for travel planning. It stands out because it provides direct links to attractions, restaurants, and hotels, and it currently offers the highest accuracy among the tools we tested. That said, we still suggest using more than one AI tool to cross-check information for better accuracy.

Our second recommendation is Trip Advisor’s Trip Builder. Instead of writing long prompts, it starts by asking you simple multiple-choice questions and builds ideas from there. It’s especially good at recommending activities and restaurants.

Use it as an idea generator, not a booking agent.

The main difference is that you shouldn’t trust AI the same way you would trust a real booking agent. Always double-check the information because the system is still not fully mature (yet). For example, even if a restaurant says it has halal options, it’s best to verify again on their current menu.

AI also can’t guarantee the latest information or recommend true hidden gems like a local agent can. Most of its suggestions come from popular attractions in big databases, so your itinerary can easily end up looking quite similar to everyone else’s.

We hope today’s post helps you with your trip planning! With AI tools now, you can create a basic itinerary framework and save some money on hiring a professional planner. Want to make things easier? Once you have that, just share it with us — we’ll check everything, make improvements, and handle all the bookings for you!
