Cherry blossom season in Japan is almost over, and many travellers are now asking, “What’s next?”

Especially for those planning to visit in May and June, people often wonder what they can do during this period. Today, we’d like to share some great ideas on how to enjoy Japan during May and June, plus one important thing you should keep in mind when traveling during this time. 🫣

Rainy Season (May–June)

Many travellers don’t realise this, but May to June is Japan’s rainy season (梅雨tsuyu). While the scenery during this period may not be as obvious as in other seasons, it can still be one of the best times for Malaysians to visit Japan. The temperature is usually very comfortable for us (around 16–23°C), almost like Genting Highlands. This is also one of the least crowded periods in Japan, so you can enjoy the country in a much more peaceful and relaxed way compared to the peak seasons.

Flower Viewing

May and June mark the beginning of the flower blooming season across Japan.

Some of the most beautiful spots during this time include:

  • Wisteria (purple flower) viewing at Ashikaga Flower Park (Tochigi)
  • Nemophila (baby blue eyes) at Hitachi Seaside Park (Ibaraki)
  • Shibazakura (pink moss) at Fuji Motosuko Resort (Yamanashi)

These flower spots are also family-friendly and suitable for elderly travellers, as they are generally easy to walk around and not too physically demanding.

Hiking & Camping

May and June are actually one of the best times for outdoor activities like hiking and camping, thanks to the pleasant weather. After the cherry blossoms finish blooming in April, May brings the beautiful season of shinryoku (新緑) — when trees sprout fresh, vibrant green leaves. This creates a refreshing and lush scenery that makes hiking especially enjoyable.

Some beginner-friendly and easily accessible hiking spots near Tokyo include:

  • Mt. Takao
  • Mt. Mitake
  • Mt. Oyama
  • Mt. Jimba

Most of these mountains equipped with cable car too, perfect for families, first-time hikers, and even elderly travellers.

Best Spot to Visit in Japan During May & June?

Many people don’t realize this, but Hokkaido is actually one of the best places to visit in Japan during May and June.

Why? Because it offers the perfect combination of everything mentioned above:

  • Pleasant and comfortable weather
  • Beautiful spring scenery and flowers (you can still catch late cherry blossoms in early May!)
  • Much fewer crowds compared to mainland Japan
  • Better prices on accommodation and tours
  • Ideal conditions for outdoor activities like hiking and nature exploration

If you want to enjoy spring in Japan without the crowds and at a comfortable temperature, Hokkaido should be at the top of your list.

However, Take Note!

Although there are many great reasons to visit Japan in May and June, there’s one important thing you need to be aware of.

The first week of May is Golden Week — one of the biggest holiday periods in Japan (and also a major holiday in China). During this time, many locals travel too, so accommodation, flights, and transportation can get more expensive and crowded.

If you plan to travel during Golden Week, we strongly recommend booking your hotels, chartered services, and tours as early as possible.
